Hacking Google

Houdini & Redshift data visualizations for Google’s six-part security docuseries

Most of the work done by Google’s security teams happens quietly behind closed doors, whether they are intercepting state-sponsored cyber attacks or trying to break into Google’s own systems to find vulnerabilities first. Hacking Google is a six-part documentary series that goes inside the Threat Analysis Group, Detection and Response, Red Team, Bug Hunters, and Project Zero.

Working with the team at Google Creative Lab, I helped develop the overall visual concept for the series and led the motion direction and execution for Episode 002 (Detection and Response). Starting from empty black placeholders in the edit, I took every sequence from initial concept to wireframe to final render. Because Google’s strict security rules meant we couldn’t use any external render farms, I had to heavily optimize our Houdini, Cinema 4D, and Redshift setups so we could render everything locally in-house.

The series won a D&AD Wood Pencil for Non-Scripted Long Form Entertainment (IMDb).
