Google Draw to Art

Visualising 122,000 machine-learning artwork features in 3D space with Houdini ยท Winner of the Cannes Lions Bronze Lion

Draw to Art is an interactive installation made by Google Creative Lab in partnership with Google Arts & Culture. Using machine learning, you can draw a simple sketch to search through thousands of paintings, drawings, and sculptures from museums around the world and see what matches your doodle.

On this project I used Houdini to visualise the actual distribution of the 122,000 artwork features in 3D space, importing the machine-learning coordinates from our engineers and applying the matching artwork texture to each plane, and used After Effects to animate the explainer showing how the system works.

Featured in Creative Review (Interactive Easel), the project won a Cannes Lions Bronze Lion, The One Show Gold & Silver Pencils, D&AD Graphite & Wood Pencils, and an ADC Bronze Cube & Merit.

Role: Houdini 3D Data Visualisation & Motion Design.
