Google NSynth Super
Data-driven After Effects & Lottie SVG audio visualisations for Google Creative Lab · D&AD Yellow Pencil & FWA of the Day
NSynth Super is an open-source experimental hardware instrument made by Google Creative Lab that gives musicians the ability to play music using completely new sounds generated by Magenta’s NSynth neural network from four different source sounds.
Working with the Google Creative Lab team, I was responsible for envisioning and delivering the animations for the website and launch films. To stay true to the underlying machine learning model, I built the animations in After Effects directly from the real data generated by the AI model. Working purely with vector shapes and baked expressions, I exported a 30-second animation using Bodymovin / Lottie into a lightweight 500KB JSON file that renders live as an interactive SVG on the NSynth Super website (and right here on this page).
The project won a D&AD Yellow Pencil, an ADC Silver Cube, a One Show Merit, a Communication Arts Award, and FWA of the Day.
Role: Data-Driven Motion Design & Lottie / SVG Animation.
Live Lottie / Bodymovin SVG (anim56.json, 547 KB): Exported directly from After Effects vector shapes and baked expressions for nsynthsuper.withgoogle.com. Click anywhere on the animation to replay from the start.
